26 Sep You Raise Me Up
It’s not every day I share the stage with a world-class singer.
Rachael Russell is an international soprano who I had the pleasure of working with on Saturday for a special evening at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool. A celebration for two very special people – Terry Burgess and Dominic Browne – A couple who I’ve known for a long time who planned a double celebration to mark their 45th anniversary since they met, and Terry’s 65th birthday. Unfortunately Dominic sadly lost his battle to cancer late last year and the stress of his illness had taken its toll on Terry, who himself had to be rushed to hospital for an emergency operation, and then induced into a coma to try and save his life.
Terry recovered, but only to find that Dominic had passed away before he had chance to say goodbye. The time since has proved difficult for Terry trying to deal with his own recovery and adjusting to life without his life-long partner.
This song is special to them because it was played at their blessing fifteen years earlier, so it seemed appropriate to dedicate it to Terry and Dominic as a fitting tribute. I hope I do it some justice as it’s not in my usual style or key, but Rachael’s faultless voice helps to take it to another level.
A huge thank you to everyone for their donations to Woodland Hospice who helped to make Dominic’s last days as comfortable as possible and to everyone who was there to help Terry celebrate an evening full of mixed emotion and memories.
